the role of psychology in graphic design

If you will let me get nostalgic for a moment ☁️

Reflecting back to when I was just a baby designer starting school, I was so excited to jump right into drawing and designing. I had my new markers and pencils ready - let's go. Imagine my surprise when there was 0 drawing, and I had to write papers on theory and do exams on letterforms. Uhh.. I thought designers just have fun and make things look good. Nope, that's not the case. Here are the ways that graphic designers use psychology daily in our everyday work.

Colour Theory

Colour theory is the study of how colours interact, harmonize, and evoke emotions, guiding the effective use of colour in art and design. Colour choices evoke specific emotions and associations, influencing how viewers interpret and respond to a design.

Typography

Typography is the art and technique of arranging and designing typefaces to create visually appealing and readable written content. Different font styles and sizes convey distinct tones and messages, affecting the readability and emotional resonance of the content.

Visual Hierarchy

Visual hierarchy refers to the arrangement of elements in a design, guiding viewers' attention and emphasizing the importance of specific content over others. We can intentionally direct viewers' attention and guide them through the content in a meaningful way.

Cognitive Load

Designs that reduce cognitive load and offer simplicity, clarity, and enhance user experience and comprehension. Too many design elements, colours and fonts become visually overstimulating and overwhelming making it difficult to communicate your message.

Gestalt Principles

Gestalt principles are psychological principles that describe how we view and interpret visual elements. Understanding Gestalt principles, such as proximity, similarity, and closure, creates cohesive and visually pleasing designs that engage the viewer's perception and cognition.

If you're a budding designer or self-taught, save this list to refer back to later. Mastering these design principles will make you an expert in your craft, allow you to design intentionally and ensure everything you create has meaning and purpose.
